Statement from President-elect Obama on the passage of SCHIP in the House:
“In this moment of crisis, ensuring that every child in America has access to affordable health care is not just good economic policy, but a moral obligation we hold as parents and citizens. That is why I'm so pleased that Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives came together to provide health insurance to over ten million children whose families have been hurt most by this downturn. This coverage is critical, it is fully paid for, and I hope that the Senate acts with the same sense of urgency so that it can be one of the first measures I sign into law when I am President.” source: Real Clear Politics

Deadline Met: 'Court Grants National Security Archive Motion to Search White House Computers and Preserve E-mails-
All we have to hide, is our incriminations and secrets.
Score one for The National Archive. Well Done.
NEW - January 14, 2009

“There is nothing like a deadline to clarify the issues,” said Archive Director Tom Blanton. “In six days the Bush Executive Office of the President will be gone and without this order, their records may disappear with them. The White House will complain about the last minute challenge, but this is a records crisis of the White House's own making.”
Counsel for the Archive, Sheila Shadmand from Jones Day made clear: “The White House has been on notice since we filed our lawsuit a year and a half ago that they would have to retrieve and preserve their e-mail. Instead of coming clean and telling the public what they have been doing to solve the crisis, they refused to say anything. At this point, it is critical to preserve evidence that can help get to the bottom of the problem and prevent it from happening again.”

American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan: President-elect Obama to be in Bedford Heights, Ohio on Friday, January 14, 2009
source: USA Today
Obama's transition team just announced the trip. According to a statement sent to reporters:
President-elect Obama will tour the Cardinal Fastener & Specialty Company, a growing company with innovative production practices that manufactures parts used to construct wind turbines. President-elect Obama will discuss how companies like Cardinal Fastener and workers like those in Bedford Heights would benefit from an American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, which would aim to create nearly half a million American jobs by investing in clean energy like wind power.
USAService.org: Colin Powell joins Barack Obama in a call to service
Now I have read some conspiratorial 'Anti-Obama' websites that have said that Barack Obama is going to try to make all Americans perform mandatory community service.
That just so ain't so.
There may down the road be leglislation connected to funding for higher education that creates a requirement for some kind of service to country in exchange for grants. That's not mandatory. It's a deal, and certainly it's a deal that nobody has to accept if they do not want to.
One. You can't make Americans do anything they don't already want to do. And Two, you can't make Americans do anything they don't already want to do.
Americans can be as stubborn as they are optimistic.
Sometimes though, we all need a little nudge, a bit of inspiration and encouragement for motivation and action. That is all the President-elect is trying to do.
That argument being presented by some is pretty weak and in my humble opinion just a tad bit silly.

The Obamas have chosen Monday, January 19, a day already filled with significance for its designation as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as a National Day of Service. Yesterday, Michelle Obama sent out a video message asking Americans throughout the country to join with her and Barack as they kick off the service initiative.
And on Friday, former secretary of state Colin Powell added his voice to the mix. According to the AP:
Former secretary of state Colin Powell helped promote a mass volunteer initiative on behalf of US president-elect Barack Obama Friday, calling on Americans to make long-term commitment to serve their communities. read more here

Military Report 'JOE 2008' cites Mexico as one of two states that may suddenly collapse
This report was published in November 2008. President-elect Barack Obama recently met with President Felipe Calderón of Mexico who offered the President-elect advice on improving America's image in the world.
Meetings between incoming U.S. Presidents and the Mexican Presidents prior to inauguration have become standard in recent years.
EL PASO - Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats.
The command's "Joint Operating Environment (JOE 2008)" report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "In terms of worse-case scenarios for the Joint Force and indeed the world, two large and important states bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse: Pakistan and Mexico.
"The Mexican possibility may seem less likely, but the government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault and press by criminal gangs and drug cartels. How that internal conflict turns out over the next several years will have a major impact on the stability of the Mexican state. Any descent by Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone."
The U.S. Joint Forces Command, based in Norfolk, Va., is one of the Defense Departments combat commands that includes members of the different military service branches, active and reserves, as well as civilian and contract employees. One of its key roles is to help transform the U.S. military's capabilities.

The President-elect and Calderon also discussed the North American Free Trade Agreement, with Obama's emphasis being on the rights of labor and environmental issues. Calderon acknowledged the issues of gangs and drugs and pointed out the efforts he was undertaking regarding these issues.Calderón has deployed tens of thousands of Mexican soldiers and federal police to fight drug cartels. The United States must do its part, Calderón said, by limiting arms trafficking and reducing drug consumption. "We are working hard on the supply side," he said. "Working on the demand side is critical." source: The Washington Post
This is yet another issue that the Obama Administration will be dealing with, but the up side is that we can have confidence that the new grown ups in The White House will actually be dealing with it.
Hillary Clinton and plans that she has set forth with respect to Department of State, and the other institutions within the government that are supporting reinvigorating and blowing the dust off of the State Department, are also a good sign for hope that the foreboding in the above report may be averted with good leadership, planning and execution.
Rachel Maddow had an informative, interesting and hope inspiring segment on what can, should and will happen (fingers crossed and double-knotted here) with Hillary Clinton's State Department.I'm going with 'not to worry (too much)' on this one. There is cause for optimism rather than pessimism due to the incoming Administration and the supporting cast of characters.
Is having a President who clearly loves to read good for America?

A 2006 Skokie Public Library poster features the president-elect reading Team Of Rivals: the Political Genius Of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Skokie Public Library"It's great news for Democrats," he said. "It's great news for African-Americans. But I think it is also great news for everyone here tonight because our new president is, in the broadest sense of the word, a reader."
...Harold Augenbraum, the executive director of the National Book Foundation, says the book world sees something different in Obama because he's the author of two best-sellers: "You actually have both a writer and a reader in the White House who is articulate and eloquent in his own right."
What's more, Obama is an orator, and Harper's vice president and publisher Jonathan Burnham says it's the president-elect's way with words that so excites the publishing world.
"He's deeply interested in the effects of words on listeners and on readers, so that makes his reading more important," says Burnham. "And it's clear that he reads not just for entertainment, but to stimulate whatever gifts he has that make him the incredible speaker that he is."
Obama likes nonfiction, and he likes novels by great American writers like Toni Morrison and E.L. Doctorow. Source: NPR - read/listen to more here
Obama and Biden have a date with 'The Supremes"
The President-elect and the Vice President-elect have accepted a pre-inaugural invitation to visit The Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts extended the invitation which in the more recent history of Presidential inaugurations is becoming tradition.
Tis better to have been elected and invited than appointed and forego the need to be invited.
I just can't get the song 'Baby Love' out of my head. You gotta love The Supremes.
The court said Roberts, who will administer the oath of office to Obama next Tuesday, invited the pair to meet with him and the associate justices in the ceremonial West Conference Room, and maybe take a tour of the place. Reporters and photographers are not invited.
A meeting between the president and the court is something of a modern-day tradition. Ronald Reagan and his vice president, George H.W. Bush, visited with the justices before they took office in 1980, and Bill Clinton and Al Gore made the trip in 1992 (the famously late Clinton kept the justices waiting). In the wake of the court's 5 to 4 decision in Bush v. Gore that settled the 2000 presidential election, President Bush and Vice President Cheney did not visit before taking office. source: The Washington Post
