The Day in 100 Seconds: Viagra and Candy

It is Thursday, we're not in a free fall, not in a recovery either, I don't know when, bigger then ever, we will come out big time, Congressional report, stimulus money, misspent, no strings attached basis, second stimulus, I'm committed to the first stimulus, time to work, it's not working, poorly designed, poorly executed, turkey, second one may well be called for, hope it doesn't get watered down, like taking 1/2 tablet of Viagra, bunch of candy, new dust up between congress and the CIA, CIA lying since 2001, don't really want to know, American people want to see, on the level, political theater, bizarre episode, attacking the CIA, making the Speaker look good, dangerous, very, very bizarre, driving the Republicans to distraction, any excuse will do, looking for some adult supervision, oversight responsibility, and that's that

Former CIA officer with Bill Maher: 'It's torture...'

Bob Baer, a former CIA officer visits the set of Real Time and explains why torture doesn't work and why waterboarding is torture. President Obama speaks at CIA

source: The Political Carnival

President Obama tells CIA employees that he released the interrogation memos due to the "exceptional circumstances" surrounding them, and that the U.S. is more secure when deploying both power, and the power of our values.

We have a new CIA directior finally

We'll see how this goes.

[Leon] Panetta was sworn by CIA Deputy Director Stephen Kappes.

In a message sent to CIA employees, Panetta wrote, "When President Obama asked if I would accept this assignment, he said he wanted someone he could trust, who was independent, and who would call them as he sees them. Throughout my 40-year career in government, I have made it a point to speak honestly to my colleagues, my coworkers, my constituents, and my president. I hope that we can speak honestly to each other and to those we serve." source: ABC News

Leon Panetta selected to head up the CIA, Dennis Blair will be Direction of National Intelligence

Say no to torture. Panetta is true to his word, and actually knows what constitutes torture, he might be the right guy to head up the CIA.

Time will tell.

Obama 'has selected spying chief'

Barack Obama's apparent choice to head the CIA, Leon Panetta
Mr Panetta has spoken out against the CIA's interrogation policy

US President-elect Barack Obama is to pick Leon Panetta, a former congressman and aide to Bill Clinton, to run the CIA, US media have reported.

Mr Panetta was President Clinton's Chief of Staff between 1994 and 1997.

Mr Obama will also select retired US Navy Adm Dennis Blair to serve as his Director of National Intelligence, according to US media reports.

Adm Blair led anti-terrorism efforts in South-East Asia as chief of the navy's Pacific Command after the 9/11 attacks.

In a January 2008 article for Washington Monthly magazine, Mr Panetta expressed his opposition to the use of torture.

"Those who support torture may believe that we can abuse captives in certain select circumstances and still be true to our values," he wrote.

"But that is a false compromise. We either believe in the dignity of the individual, the rule of law, and the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment, or we don't. There is no middle ground."

Afghanistan: All hail the pharmaceutical industry ---tribal leaders giving it up in exchange for getting it up

Wow. Intelligence for an erection. Free elections and free erections. There's so much comedy in this story.

Viagra has been a 'God Send' for men (and women too). It's probably a miracle to that Afghan chieftain. I can't blame him for giving up information in exchange for it. Not one bit.

The Afghan chieftain looked older than his 60-odd years, and his bearded face bore the creases of a man burdened with duties as tribal patriarch and husband to four younger women. His visitor, a CIA officer, saw an opportunity, and reached into his bag for a small gift.

Four blue pills. Viagra.

"Take one of these. You'll love it," the officer said. Compliments of Uncle Sam.

The enticement worked. The officer, who described the encounter, returned four days later to an enthusiastic reception. The grinning chief offered up a bonanza of information about Taliban movements and supply routes -- followed by a request for more pills.

The Tenet Chronicles: Swimming Pools - Movie Stars - Arab Sheiks, and Good Scotch Whiskey

Getting drunk and spouting off what you one really thinks is an American pass time for many. It's still weird when the keepers of our nations secrets get caught doing it. Scotch will most definitely do that to you though. So will tequila.

Think Progress has a post about a “whopper of a scene” from a new book coming out entitled A World of Trouble, which focuses on the complicated and oft troubled relationships between America and the Middle East. The book's prologue exposes a story about George Tenet, the guy who I have often thought of as 'the fall guy' for the Bush Administration.

...former CIA director George Tenet “drunk on scotch, flailing about Prince Bandar’s Riyadh pool, screaming about the Bush Administration officials who were just then trying to pin the Iraq WMD fiasco on him.” Tyler reports that Tenet also “mocked the neoconservatives in the Bush administration” as “the Jews“:

According to one witness, he mocked the neoconservatives in the Bush administration and their alignment with the right wing of Israel’s political establishment, referring to them with exasperation as, “the Jews.” read more here

I sort of felt sorry for Tenet way back then up until I saw him on television receiving the Medal of Freedom from Bush. I stopped my sympathy after that.

Crazy. Stunning. Stupid. Anyway.

Peace and Love.

CIA Factbook: Nations with the most Surplus and the most DEBT

Alrighty then. We have a financial crisis in the U.S. and the global community right now with our markets. We are carrying more debt than any other nation. I know there are a lot of things that factor into this that I do not understand. On the face it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

So we send money to other nations, among them Israel and Iraq and we borrow it from China. I'm totally confused.

Do you have any thoughts on this? Please feel free to comment and help me to understand. PD

Peon Executive Order: I order a review of Bush's Executive Orders and guess what? Barack Obama agrees with me.

OBAMA WOULD ORDER REVIEW OF BUSH'S EXECUTIVE ORDERS

By Joseph J. Holland

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama told House Democrats on Tuesday that as president he would order his attorney general to scour White House executive orders and expunge any that "trample on liberty," several lawmakers said.

Presidents, as head of the executive branch of government, issue such orders to direct operations of executive branch agencies, like the Justice Department and the CIA. For example, President Bush used an executive order last year to breathe new life into the CIA's controversial terror interrogation program that allowed harsh questioning of suspects.

Obama "talked about how his attorney general is to review every executive order and immediately eliminate those that trample on liberty," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

"He indicated there would be a review in his administration," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the House majority whip. read more here

Peon on GOP Scandals. Your Illustrated/Interactive Guilde to GOP Scandals Since the Year 2000

I was thinking very hard about something to write about. I thought that it would be helpful to write about all the Republican scandals that have taken place since 2000 when President Bush ascended the Presidency. I started doing some research, and my job was made so much easier by this wonderful illustrated/interactive guide from Slate dated May 11, 2007.

When you click on the graphic you will be taken to the article, then click the graphic again:

If anything has happened since then that is not included, I don't think we should even try to think what it might be. Click around and remember and think of all the memories. After that please make a decision to vote for Barack Obama for President, and also consider Democrats in your state who are running for offices.

Well that was easy.

Peace and Love,

PD
