Drive for Change in Nashua, NH: A Full Day's Work

by Bradley Portnoy

Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 04:38 PM

A day that started out with rain is ending with the sun peeking through the clouds here in Nashua. After a long day of canvassing, the Rhode Island volunteers are beginning to stream back into the field office, and the buses are humming outside, ready to take them home.

With over 100 volunteers who made the trip, people all around Nashua got to hear Barack's message of change today. One volunteer from Pawtucket, Matt, knocked on almost 130 doors.

Just from being out there, I think the message of someone taking the time and energy to campaign makes a difference. There were some voters that were undecided, and I think I managed to build a rapport with them.

Judy and Elizabeth also had a good experience in the field today. Both from Providence, they saw a great opportunity to correct some of the false impressions that people have of Senator Obama. Judy canvassed undecided voters and was glad to find that people were receptive to what she had to say.

I do believe that I changed some minds. People who were open to listening seemed willing to hear about the issues. A lot of them didn't know about Senator Obama's wonderful economic policies, and I was excited to be able to tell them about his economic plan. There were a couple of people who started out ambivalent about him, but I think I got out the facts they needed to hear

Today's volunteers may be on their way back to Rhode Island, but more will be coming to New Hampshire every day until the election. With only 51 days left, they know that there isn't a moment to waste. If you live near New Hampshire, sign up to join a Drive for Change caravan. If you're not in the Northeast, you can visit your state page and find ways to get involved near your home. From Rhode Island? Make sure to keep your eye on the Rhode Island blog for updates from state headquarters.

Drive for Change: Senators Whitehouse and Leahy Fire Up the Volunteers

by Bradley Portnoy

Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Joining the Rhode Islanders on the bus to Nashua was Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, who addressed the volunteers in both the Nashua and Manchester offices. He joined the caravan early in the day, with doughnuts and coffee for everyone. After a brief speech in Providence, he settled in with the other volunteers for the trip to New Hampshire.

After the Nashua crowd was trained on canvassing techniques how to best connect with voters, Senator Whitehouse stepped in to get them fired up.

Four more years of these policies, and I'm not sure what it'll take to bring our country back. We can't afford Republicans even when they pretend to be moderate. But we've never had a more inspiring candidate. We've got a lot to be proud of in Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

In the Manchester office, a crowd of volunteers converged from Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts to join local residents in another canvass. Senator Whitehouse was joined by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, where they again spoke to the assembled volunteers.

Anna, Betsy, and Kevin carpooled in from Boston. A few hours ago they were strangers, but now Kevin says they're fast friends.

We just met today, at 10:30 AM, before we left. We just went online, looked up events, and saw this one... I wanted to do a lot of work for the campaign to make sure that New Hampshire goes Democratic.

Anna was an Organizing Fellow in Iowa this summer, but recently moved to Boston.

I just moved here and hadn't really done anything with the campaign since July, and was in a new place and wanted to meet some new people. There's so little time left. I really love meeting people by knocking on their doors. There's nothing like it.

The New Hampshire office is always looking for more volunteers - if you live in a nearby state, sign up to join a Drive for Change caravan. If you're not in the Northeast, you can visit your state page and find ways to get involved in your community. From Rhode Island? Make sure to keep your eye on the Rhode Island blog for updates from state headquarters.

Manchester, NH - On the Road with Barack Obama - Thinking about our fellow Americans in Texas and the Gulf as Hurricane Ike moves through

Post from Obama Road Blog:

Road Blog: Barack in Manchester, NH

The line for the Manchester rally snaked around many blocks of downtown Manchester, all the way to Veterans' Memorial Park on Elm street.

District Fire Chief Alfred P. Poulin Jr estimated this morning's crowd at 7000 inside the venue and 1000 watching from the perimeter.

Some folks here have seen Barack before. He spoke at this very park last Labor Day, but many came for the first time, curious to hear the plans for change that Barack will bring to this country when he is elected president of the United States.

They couldn't have picked a prettier day to satisfy their curiosity. After the downpours of the last day, today was bright, clear and beautiful.

The weather was on everyone's mind this morning, with reports of the flooding and heavy damage in coastal Texas, livelihoods destroyed and families displaced. Barack began his speech by reminding the crowd that federal services in these areas are stretched thin, having just dealt with Hurricane Gustav two weeks ago. Barack told the crowd:

We are enjoying a beautiful day here, but let's think about the families that are having their lives upended by Ike... Search and Rescue teams are just now getting into Galveston. It's important that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers. During moments of tragedy we come together. We may argue, but we are all Americans. We are there for each other in moments of need. I hope this enormous crowd will be monitoring needs -- the Red Cross will need support. I know that you will be there for them and that you will help them.

Here is the speech in its entirety:

Ed Prouty from New Hampshire - Two Millionth Donor to the Obama campaign

Barack and the Two Millionth Donor

by Christopher HassMonday, August 18, 2008 at 04:19 PM

Last week Ed Prouty, a heating and cooling contractor from Atkinson, New Hampshire was the two millionth person to donate money to the campaign. It's a milestone that few believed was possible -- 2,000,000 individual supporters owning a piece of this campaign.

On Friday, Ed received a surprise phone call from Barack himself ...

When Barack asked how business was going, Ed said, "It's the worst we’ve ever seen in 25 years.”

Ed spoke to Barack about a number of other issues important to him and his community, including the foreclosure crisis, health care and the environment.

At the end of their call, Ed promised Barack, “I’ll be out there working with you.”

Thank you to everyone for the work you've done to build this movement. Keep up the momentum by making a donation today.
